week of feb 14th

This weeks riddle:

A frog fell into a hole that was 14 ½ feet deep. He could jump 3 feet, but he slid back a foot each time he jumped. How many jumps does it take him to get out of the hole?

I decided to go with a math riddle, since we are in the midst of a language arts block. I'm trying to keep Lyra thinking about threes and fours, and triangles and squares, in creative ways. Our next math block will be working on square numbers. I personally never fully understood the WHY of square numbers until I started preparing to teach Lyra. I'm actually a little nervous I'm gonna get confused. I was just never really taught WHY. I was taught to do it, and to be tested on it. And that was that. But Lyra has so much fun with math, and is starting to see the world in a such a magnificently beautiful way. When first taking drawing in college, I had a glimpse into that world. And I am very excited to have her grow up with her eyes open to the beauty of mathematics.

We are also still working on our bunnies, bunny songs and Brer Rabbit  stories. The children are really enjoying the bunny songs.

Rabbit-All Year Round, Candy Verney

rabbit run on the frozen ground,
 who told you so?
rabbit run on the frozen ground,
how do you know?

I caught a rabbit  uh-huh!
I caught a rabbit  uh-huh!
I caught a rabbit  uh-huh!
I caught a rabbit  oh!
foxy
cardinal
deer
We added Squirrel and other animals we see here in winter.

And this song

HOP one time,

hope two.
hop and hop
til you get through

hop three times,
hop four
hop and hop and hop some more

hop five times.
hop six
do some silly hoping tricks
hope seven times, hop eight, hop a lot
now thats great

hop nice times, hop ten hop and hop and hop again.

We were supposed to move on this week to other winter animal songs, but the children are still enjoying these. And its so funny and cute to see them do the big facial gestures with "uh-huh, uh-huh".
